Watering Trees In Drought

Helping Trees in an Unexpected Heat Wave

As the summer heat intensifies, trees may struggle to cope, showing signs like wilting, leaf scorch, and stunted growth. Recognizing these symptoms promptly is crucial. Deep, infrequent watering, allowing the soil to drain between watering sessions, is key. Young trees require extra hydration for establishment, typically 5 to 15 gallons weekly.

Apply water directly to the soil, avoiding evaporation, and replenish mulch to shield roots from heat. Regularly check irrigation systems to ensure proper water distribution, preventing over or under-watering.

Protect your trees from the adverse effects of heat waves by taking proactive measures to maintain their health and vitality.

Signs Of Drought Stress In Trees

Signs of drought (or heat stress) will be the most visible in the foliage. Look for these common symptoms:

  • Leaf wilt or leaves that start to curl
  • Scorched, gray-tinted leaves
  • Leaf loss
  • Thinning canopy
  • Branches drying out and dying
  • Wood-boring insects
  • Pine tree discoloration: Pines turn grayish-green color and then turn into rust once dead

What not to do during a drought:

  • Water on windy or rainy days
  • Over-water
  • Adjust sprinklers to aim at the trunk of trees, which may cause trunk cankers or lead to root-rot diseases

How To Help Your Trees Survive Dry Conditions

Trees recovering from a harsh winter, temporarily coping with heat stress, or lacking a seasonal substitute for an irrigation system, can benefit from subsurface watering.

Consider subsurface watering for:

  • Trees and shrubs without irrigation systems
  • Newly planted trees
  • Temporary relief of heat stress, especially on large, mature trees
  • Evergreen trees at risk from winter drying conditions
