Tumwater, WA
The city of Tumwater hired Davey Resource Group to inventory trees across 201 acres, providing professional guidance, a priority planting analysis, and a tree management plan.
Combining Forces With Volunteers
The city of Tumwater hired Davey Resource Group, Inc. (DRG) to complete a tree inventory in the city’s parks, facilities, and natural areas, covering an area of approximately 201 acres. The city manages the data using TreeKeeper®, which contains information for about 7,345 trees. DRG collected data on 2,062 trees, while volunteers collected the remaining 5,286. DRG collaborated with the volunteers to reconcile and review their data.
This project aimed to enhance community participation in urban forestry management initiatives. To support community interest in collecting tree data, Tumwater invited DRG to oversee volunteer activities and provide professional guidance and support to residents documenting trees in parks. DRG led a team of volunteers in gathering tree inventory data and provided guidance and data validation to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the tree inventory.
Looking Toward The Future
In addition to the tree inventory, DRG provided a comprehensive priority planting analysis and a tree management plan. This plan not only predicts the future care needs of the trees but also estimates the associated costs, thereby facilitating effective annual budgeting over the next four years. The project was made possible through the financial support of a Washington Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry Grant.
