The Nature Conservancy Of Ohio
DRG partnered with The Nature Conservancy to perform design/build services for stream and wetland mitigation at the John A. Wannemacher Nature Reserve in Miami County, OH. The project restored over 2,400 linear feet of stream, utilizing bioengineered bank treatments and in-stream structures.
Enhancing Habitat Through Restoration
The Nature Conservancy of Ohio (TNC) selected Davey Resource Group, Inc. (DRG) to perform design/build services supporting stream and wetland mitigation at the John A. Wannemacher Nature Reserve. The project provided compensatory wetland and stream mitigation in Miami County’s Upper Great Miami watershed.
DRG designed and constructed more than 2,400 linear feet of stream, restoring a previously channelized tributary to its historic alignment. Bioengineered bank treatments include salvaged and re-used onsite timber and woody debris to create toewood revetment, engineered debris banks, rootwads, and log deflectors. In-stream structures consist of rock riffles, boulder drops, and log weirs, providing grade control, flow deflection, energy dissipation, and submerged aquatic habitat.
Showcasing Key Natural Features
Adjacent to the stream is an extensive floodplain wetland system, including pulsed flow wetlands and vernal pools, surrounded by a riparian buffer. DRG collaborated with The Nature Conservancy staff to integrate key natural features, including floodplain forest protection, creating vernal pools and pulsed flow wetlands and establishing microtopographic features throughout the wetland complex.
