MIT’s Tree Inventory & Management Plan Maintains Healthy Urban Forest In Cambridge, MA

DRG helped prestigious university MIT gain a clear understanding of their tree assets and forestry management needs by performing a comprehensive tree inventory.

Project Narrative:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has a long history of campus tree management within a dense urban environment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Over the years, the grounds management operations have embarked on several attempts to complete a 100% accurate campus tree inventory. In 2017, DRG was hired to update the campus’ tree inventory. We located approximately 2,300 trees while collecting information on location, risk, condition, recommended maintenance, as well as physically tagging each tree.

Data Delivered Through TreeKeeper

Upon completion of the tree inventory, DRG wrote a comprehensive Tree Management Plan, created maps, and incorporated TreeKeeper® into the client’s management routine. Sections included in the Tree Management Plan include: Tree Inventory Analysis, Benefits of the Urban Forest, and Tree Management Program.

MIT adopted DRG’s state-of-the-art TreeKeeper system to proactively manage and maintain the tree inventory. With 2,264 trees within the system, MIT can easily access all relevant tree inventory data, schedule work, upload photos, track maintenance, and demonstrate the benefits of trees to the public.
