Lake Barrington Shores
DRG helped the Lake Barrington Shores gated community control invasive vegetation and establish native habitat areas, keeping up with the HOA’s goals of incorporating more natural areas in the community.
Project Narrative:
Davey Resource Group (DRG) was contracted in 2013 by Lake Barrington Shores to establish native areas throughout their gated community. The community surrounds a lake and golf course with most of the grounds consisting of manicured lawns and landscape flower beds. DRG converted the entire lakeshore to shoreline sustainable native habitat and converted an additional 16.5 acres of turf grass into natural areas through plantings and seeding. Invasive species management was instituted to decrease the invasive/unwanted vegetation and encourage establishment of native species. Prescribed burning was implemented as a management technique.
An Environmentally Conscious Transformation
DRG has taken on a stewardship approach, renewing their contract with Lake Barrington Shores for the third time in 2019 for an additional three years. In 2020, DRG began a new native plant bed on the northeast upland section of shoreline with mesic prairie plants. DRG is also managing 17 acres of the community’s 30 acres forest preserve property for invasives. DRG will continue to expand the native community while also meeting resident’s expectations.
Over the past 15 years, the property has been transformed from a golf course landscape community to a natural area habitat for countless species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and small mammals.
