Warder Perkins State Nature Preserve

Davey Resource Group’s knowledgeable staff helped The Audubon Society of Ohio take a step forward in their goal of eradicating an invasive plant species in Warder Perkins nature preserve.

Project Narrative:

Warder Perkins was designated a State Nature Preserve in 1990 and can only be visited by permit. The Preserve is situated among the rolling hills above the Ohio River in southwestern Hamilton County. The habitat found on this 25-acre site is mostly mature woodland with a well-developed understory. A picturesque forest stream runs through the site and a power line cut on the edge of the property provides some brushy successional habitat.

The Audubon Society of Ohio contracted Davey Resource Group to construct a primitive access trail from the adjacent Aston Oaks Golf Club property to the Warder Perkins State Nature Preserve and perform invasive species control for Microstegium vimineum (Japanese stiltgrass).

Achieving Maximum Treatment Coverage

The four woodland acres targeted for control within the Nature Preserve were the areas with the highest population density. The project goal included 85% target species control for all target species throughout the treatment areas.

Working in a sensitive high-quality natural area with endangered species including Trifolium stoloniferum (running buffalo clover), required a careful treatment approach.  Poast®, a grass-specific herbicide, was applied via backpack sprayers and powered sprayers. All DRG applicators are trained biologists with knowledge of the region’s native and invasive vegetation communities. Applicable pesticide licenses issued by the State of Ohio are held by staff and crew leaders.
