Five Rivers MetroParks
DRG was contracted by Five Rivers MetroParks to enhance Spring Run MetroPark, integrating the Great Miami Wetland Mitigation Bank (GMWMB) and the former Larch Tree Golf Course. The project aims to restore diverse habitats and strengthen the ecosystem with tree planting initiatives.
Restoring Natural Habitats
Davey Resource Group, Inc. (DRG) was contracted by Five Rivers MetroParks to provide environmental design and ecosystem restoration services for Spring Run MetroPark, a planned addition to the Five Rivers MetroParks system, comprising two distinct land masses: the Great Miami Wetland Mitigation Bank (GMWMB) and the former Larch Tree Golf Course. The 360-acre GMWMB previously served as farmland and was once slated for a landfill. The remaining 180 acres, formerly the Larch Tree Golf Course, were acquired by Five Rivers MetroParks in 2015. While still in development, the park already showcases diverse habitats, including wetlands and prairies, with thousands of tree seedlings planted.
Finding A Solution Through Tree Planting
The wetlands function as the kidneys of this expansive ecosystem, crucially enhancing water quality, mitigating floods, and providing habitats for diverse plant and wildlife species. Situated near Sycamore State Park, this conservation area represents one of the largest expanses of open land in Montgomery County, serving as essential habitat for native wildlife, including rare bird species.
To strengthen these ecosystems, DRG installed 4,350 bare-root trees in the Spring of 2023 as well as 3,000 native trees and shrubs in the wetland buffer and upland buffer areas.
