City Of Elmhurst, IL
DRG increased the ecological and aesthetic value of several wastewater lift stations along a well-traveled nature trail in the city of Elmhurst, Illinois.
Project Narrative:
The City of Elmhurst contracted Davey Resource Group (DRG) in 2014 to establish native landscaping around multiple lift stations along the Salt Creek Trail. We used a combination of native vegetation seeds and plugs along the trail, and also installed interpretive signs that detail the importance of native habitats.
Blending Nature With Stormwater Solutions
Since the native bed installations, DRG has continued to steward the stations, using management practices of selective mowing, mechanical pulling, and selective herbicide application to control invasives. Controlled burning has also been implemented to help native species reliant on fire to thrive while suppressing non-native competitors.
These landscape beds make the lift stations a welcome pollinator habitat instead of an eyesore along a well-traveled nature trail. DRG looks forward to a continuing partnership with the City of Elmhurst for the stewardship of these sites.
