Pacific Gas & Electric

A number of possibly unsafe trees within the gas transmission right-of-way required inspection. Pacific Gas and Electric required the quick assistance of Davey Resource Group, Inc. to inspect and preserve the trees while preventing tree failure.

The Challenge

Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz, California, stretches over 7,000 acres, providing visitors with a beautiful landscape and diverse trails perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park receives almost half a million visits every year to its beautiful coastline views, historical sites, and museums.

Maintaining safety is as imperative as preserving the park's natural beauty, so Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) requested the assistance of Davey Resource Group, Inc. (DRG) when a potential threat to safety was presented. There were 128 trees within 14 feet of the gas transmission right-of-way (ROW). DRG assigned two environmental specialists to inspect the trees and submit Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) reports quickly. Due to the training required for TRAQ certification, specialists are in short supply which can delay the turnaround time. DRG has made significant investments in employee development and training, which in turn allows the team to better support clients.

The Solution

PG&E requested the inspection be conducted within the calendar year to complete the permit process and address any issues as soon as possible. DRG assigned two environmental specialists to perform visual inspections of each tree and thoroughly analyze the crown and root collar. They evaluated the site conditions and recorded observations along with the wider scope of the impact to the park.

The Result

DRG completed and submitted the TRAQ reports to PG&E quickly and efficiently. Within just three weeks, the environmental specialists were able to classify the risk of failure for each tree and had created a mitigation strategy tailored to meet the client’s tolerance of risk. The sense of urgency and execution of the plan exceeded the client’s needs and ultimately preserved the safety of those who visit this community treasure.
