Northeast U.S. Based Utility
Infrared and Pneumatic Drill Technology Give Client Actionable Data.
The Challenge
Our utility client based in the Northeast U.S. was looking for a proactive solution to overcome the challenges of meeting annual regulated overhead inspections. Annual inspections were lagging, creating a concern throughout the utility’s organization to stay on top of their aging infrastructure.
The Solution
Davey Resource Group’s solution strategy leveraged both technology and strategic organization to accomplish the goal of a complete inspection of more than 110,000 poles in a 2-year period in an area known for harsh winter weather.
To accomplish this, two experienced project managers were assigned to organize the system plan and personnel to meet deadlines. The crews were deployed to complete a in-depth overhead visual inspection, resistograph pole inspection, provide joint-use data collection, collect GPS, and install tags to all poles in the scope.
DRG utilized technology to improve speed and enhance the final deliverable, conducting infrared scans and inspecting poles with a resistograph rather than a traditional sound and bore pole inspection. Utilizing a new technology of a resistograph drill the utility received real actionable data back on their failing poles, saved time and cost in the process.
The Results
Re-organized and proactively managed crews were able to conquer the weather and complete production under the client’s deadline. Implementing the technology solutions provided our utility client with accurate data that can be used as a foundation for annual inspections and reporting.
