City Of Morganton
Wolf Tree, Inc. carefully planned and executed a clearing project in an area with various terrain and vegetation challenges, allowing the city of Morganton, North Carolina to connect the Burke County Industrial Park to their power system.
The Challenge
In late June, the electric utility division of the North Carolina city, Morganton, needed to complete a project that would connect the newly constructed Burke County Industrial Park to their power system. The project included building a 3-phase distribution line from an existing substation in an area with terrain challenges and dense vegetation.
Wolf Tree, Inc. was called in to help based on Davey’s relationship with ElectriCities of North Carolina, a not-for-profit membership organization for municipally-owned utilities like the city of Morganton.
The Solution
The area that needed to be cleared was very diverse, including tree species ranging from brush to mature trees up to 45 inches in diameter, creek crossings, small islands between the rights-of-way (ROWs), and fencing.
To make the work area accessible to the equipment necessary to clear vegetation, Wolf Tree built makeshift bridges over the small islands and temporary gates for the fencing. For the clearing work, Wolf Tree used a brown cutter to mow tall briars, grasses, and brushy vegetation around the outside of the project area while a Shinn cutter was used to clear vegetation near the substation. Wolf Tree also used a tree trimmer and mulching head, along with hand-cutting and chipping, in the middle of the easement to clear vegetation for the new right-of-way.
The Results
Wolf Tree completed the work in a month, clearing an easement 5,800 feet in length and 40 feet wide. The city was able to power the industrial park in a timely manner, thanks to the speed and efficiency Wolf Tree demonstrated throughout the project.
