Belt Railway Company Of Chicago
Davey’s Rail Division cut back encroaching vegetation in crossings and areas with signage to ensure Belt Railway Company of Chicago’s continued service to over 100 industries safely.
The Challenge
Belt Railway Company of Chicago is the largest intermediate switching terminal railroad in the United States. With 28 miles of mainline routes and more than 300 miles of switching track, Belt Railway Company of Chicago can interchange with every railroad serving the Chicago rail hub. With Chicago being the largest hub of the U.S. railroad industry, Belt Railway Company of Chicago dispatches more than 8,400 rail cars per day and is able to service more than 100 industries.
With so many industries depending on the Belt Railway Company of Chicago for their transportation needs, the rail company must continually maintain its tracks and infrastructure to ensure their operations run smoothly and safely. Davey’s Rail Division was called in to help Belt Railway Company of Chicago achieve their goals through selective vegetation management on important areas of their railroads.
The Solution
In summer of 2023, a 4-man crew used mechanical methods to cut back encroaching vegetation on areas of importance along the railroad. Bucket trucks, SkyTrims, excavators, and chippers were used to clear railway crossings, areas where signage was blocked, and other important line-of-sight areas.
The work took about a month to complete. Davey’s crews were careful to cause minimal disruption to Belt Railway Company of Chicago’s critical railway system so they could stay up and running during the project.
The Results
Belt Railway Company of Chicago had a goal to complete the line-of-sight clearance within two months. Davey’s Rail Division was able to complete the work ahead of schedule using cost-friendly solutions.
The rail company was pleased with Davey’s ability to provide expert-level work with efficiency and ease.
