Course Expertise, From Tee To Green
With hundreds of acres and potentially thousands of trees, identifying and addressing safety risks can be a daunting task, especially given the amount of work courses put into the actual grounds. When Manhattan Woods in Nyack, New York needed help reducing risk and improving aesthetics and playability, they worked with Davey to develop a plan.
Working directly with local Davey experts, they began to identify problem areas and start to strategize how to improve the overall aesthetics of the course, as well as its playability. Then, when Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, it caused massive damage to the course – damaging over 500 trees. Davey’s local team of experts worked to clean up and restore the course – and worked with insurance companies to help facilitate the process as well.
Putting Safety First
Davey’s partnership with Manhattan Woods started with safety assessments on existing trees. The local teams worked with the course superintendent to conduct a tree-by-tree risk assessment and identify trees to be removed, pruned, or maintained. This effort resulted in overall improvement to the safety of the grounds and the aesthetics and playability of the course.
After the initial assessment, a dormant pruning plan was put into place to maintain the health of the trees. Pruning in the off-season is doubly beneficial, because it allows trees to grow and look their best throughout the season, while the work gets done during the off-season when it doesn’t interfere with play.
Additionally, Davey can provide grounds and landscape maintenance services that are done in the off-season, including developing and planning for the implementation of a plant health care program that maximizes playing time for golfers, while setting your course up for success throughout the season.
Aesthetics & Playability
Besides low scores, all golfers want a beautiful, challenging course. And the trees provide both aesthetics and obstacles for players of all abilities. Whether it’s lush green canopies that require strategic shot making to play around or over, or mulch beds under the canopy that require skills to avoid or play out of, golfers will appreciate the looks and the challenges that well-maintained trees provide.
Designers, superintendents, and greenskeepers look to incorporate and maintain natural features – like trees – into a course to maintain a sense of natural beauty. Working with native species, whether existing or planted during construction, is always a plus. Transplanting large trees as holes are redesigned is also an option, and our tree moving specialists can help plan and perform the work.
Golf is a sport of passion, tradition, and the beauty of nature. And nothing honors the game like a well-maintained course with beautiful turf, trees, and plants. Davey works closely with our golf clients to ensure that every detail is accounted for, and every situation is handled professionally and in a timely manner, so your members and guests can enjoy golf the way it should be.
