Last week marked an exciting milestone at Davey’s SEED Campus: Installation of the metal structures for our 10,700-square-foot indoor climbing center began!

When completed, the facility will support a range of training opportunities for Davey employees. Skills trainers will work with Davey offices to determine training needs, and from there, design trainings to take place at the SEED Campus.

As an ENSA-affiliated organization, the training center will also position the SEED Campus as a resource for at-height professionals across industries. ENSA (Education Now Safety Assured), provides work-at-height training and safety rigging services on metal structures, and has been our partner in conceptualizing and bringing the indoor climbing center to life.

Take a look at the start of installation in photos:

Tim Bushnell, Project Manager of Arborist Skills, who played a lead role in envisioning the indoor climbing center on Davey’s end, gives direction to the installation crew as they align the structures. Bushnell; Rick Denbeau, Arborist Skills Trainer for Davey; and two ENSA representatives, led the installation last week.

Crews install the metal “modtruss” structures that will make up the indoor climbing center. Structures will be able to be modified and rearranged based on training needs, and can simulate a tree quite nicely, according to Bushnell.

In February 2024, as structures of the SEED Campus’s main building began to rise, Davey employees signed the “Davey beam,” which will remain exposed in the climbing center.

In all, the structure contains nine towers and will feature rubber flooring. Installation at the climbing center will continue throughout the spring.

About The SEED Campus

The Davey Tree SEED (Science, Employee Education, and Development) Campus, the almost 200-acre property that formerly housed the Oak Knolls golf course and Franklin Elementary School on State Route 43 in Kent, Ohio, will be the new home to specialized training and research facilities for The Davey Tree Expert Company. The science and learning campus is being designed to ensure that Davey continues to attract and retain the most qualified, well-trained, and engaged employees possible.
