It’s a new year, and Davey is ready to usher in a new era for employee development and research – a vision that’s been about a decade in the making. The much-anticipated SEED (Science, Employee Education and Development) Campus is opening in 2025.

Our big plans are coming into focus at the former site of Oak Knolls Golf Course, which Davey acquired in 2017. An abundance of trees and green spaces offered the ideal location for us to grow and lean into our core values. We envisioned a place where Davey’s research and environmental stewardship efforts could further shape the green industry, and where endless potential for training could develop engaged employees.

SEED: From the Ground, Up

In 2022, crews broke ground, and the progress since then has been truly remarkable.

In a recent “Talking Trees” podcast, Executive Vice President Dan Joy, who has been overseeing the SEED Campus master plan, expressed gratitude as we count down to our grand opening later this year.

Recent Developments at Davey’s SEED Campus

Non-Energized Utility Right of Way

Power lines without energy running through them will serve as a training ground for employees working in utility services. The utility poles, along with guy wires and anchors, have all been installed.

Solar Field

A nearly two-acre solar array will generate as much electricity as the entire SEED Campus uses on an annual basis, making it a net-zero site. Framing and panels were installed at the end of 2024.

Indoor Spaces

The main building (which will house the indoor climbing center, labs, classrooms, offices, lobby, and event space) and the greenhouse are fully enclosed.

Arboretum

A 30-acre arboretum is the metaphorical “front door” to the campus and once completed, will be available for the public to enjoy. Phase II of planting began in fall 2024, and will resume this spring.

Join Our Exciting Journey

There will be so much more to share as the year develops, including upcoming updates on our bog and canopy walk! As we put the finishing touches on the nearly 200-acre property, we will use this space to introduce you to the people, spaces, and features that will make this place truly shine. Have an idea? We’d love to hear it! Email christina.russ@davey.com.

About The SEED Campus

The Davey Tree SEED (Science, Employee Education, and Development) Campus, the almost 200-acre property that formerly housed the Oak Knolls golf course and Franklin Elementary School on State Route 43 in Kent, Ohio, will be the new home to specialized training and research facilities for The Davey Tree Expert Company. The science and learning campus is being designed to ensure that Davey continues to attract and retain the most qualified, well-trained, and engaged employees possible.
