On the north border of the SEED Campus, a nine-acre kettle bog is one of several natural resources on the property that will provide long-term research opportunities for Davey.
Bogs are freshwater, depressional wetlands created by glaciers which are characterized by poorly drained, peat-rich soil. The SEED Campus bog is home to at least 26 unique plant species and is considered a Category 3 wetland – the highest quality in Ohio – according to the Ohio EPA’s Vegetation Index of Biotic Integrity method.
As we progress toward our grand opening, Davey Resource Group conducted a prescribed burn at the site last month. Prescribed burns help maintain long-term land management goals by removing excess vegetation. According to Tom Becker, Senior Associate Consultant, Environmental Consulting, Davey Resource Group, the team gained valuable insights from the burn and achieved several goals, including removing encroaching invasive species and managing brush around the perimeter.
In addition, a 165-foot boardwalk has been constructed to allow observation and study of the bog.
