In this wickedlocal.com article, Brad Gould from the Needham office of Hartney Greymont, a Davey company shares how rock salt can be damaging to your trees.
With winter now at about its midpoint, there's something to keep in mind — rock salt can be lethal to both trees and pets.
"Any tree can feel the effects of rock salt," said Brad Gould, an arborist from the Hartney Greymont company. He said rock salt tends to dry up soil and deplete nutrients that trees need.
Gould said the trees that are most endangered during winter are those in tightly-packed areas.
"Those are areas where trees are most affected by rock salt because they are generally planted in areas where there is a lot of foot traffic," he said, adding that in these areas, trees don't have as many nutrients available as they would if they were growing in a more remote area.
"But any tree near any road can be affected by rock salt," Gould reiterated, adding that evergreens are those typically most affected. "And you can see when they are affected — trees like evergreens take on a more pale color."
